How Lightning Works
Although there is still some debate in the scientific community about how the electrification of clouds actually occurs, it is agreed that the separation of positive and negative charges must occur within a cloud for lightning to take place. It is also generally agreed that ice must be present within a developing storm for it to eventually form lightning.
The turbulent wind environment of a thunderstorm with its updrafts and downdrafts is an ideal environment to separate electric charges: negative charges generally gather near the base of the cloud, while positive charges build in the upper reaches of the cloud. This allows electric fields to form and grow between the cloud and the ground and within the cloud itself - all necessary conditions for lightning to occur.
Since similar-charged objects repel each-other and opposite-charged objects attract each other, negative charges then begin to spread out near the base of the cloud. At the same time, positive charges start to build underneath the storm. This region of positive charges travels underneath the cloud, almost like a shadow. The positive charges tend to concentrate on tall objects, like trees, poles and buildings.
A cloud-to-ground lightning strike starts as a channel of negative charges makes its path towards the ground. This occurrence is known as a stepped leader. The stepped leader continues towards the ground in a series of steps that are each about 50 to 100 metres in length. This stepped leader can branch out in many directions.
In response to the discharge of negative charges coming from the cloud base, currents of positive charges start moving upward from the ground, usually along elevated objects; these are called streamers or upward leaders.
When the stepped leader and the upward leader meet, usually between 30 to 100 metres above the ground, the negative charges begin to flow downward. Almost instantaneously, a much larger and luminous electric current shoots up to the cloud, following the path taken by the stepped leader. This is known as the return stroke, and it is also what we see in the sky that is known as lightning. This whole process occurs so quickly (in less than one second!) that the lightning appears to travel from the cloud to the ground, when in fact, the opposite is true.
To see this process in action, you can watch the slow motion video which shows a single lightning strike. In the video you can see the many paths that the lightning wants to take, but it finds only one. The duration of the video is less than one second. No wonder the naked eye cannot see all the steps involved!
Examine above the photo of lightning hitting a tree. The stepped leader has obviously connected with the upward leader that came from the tree. But if you look closely, you can also see an upward leader coming from the tree that did not connect (indicated by the red arrow). There is also a very faint upward leader visible, coming up from a telephone pole just to the left of the tree (marked by the yellow arrow). These occur too fast and are often too faint for our eyes to see, other than when they are caught on film like this photographer managed. This photo also clearly demonstrates why it is not wise to seek shelter under a tree during a thunderstorm!
Cloud-to-ground lightning is the most dangerous and damaging form of lightning. Despite this, lightning within a cloud or that goes from cloud-to-cloud is the most common type of lightning. This type of lightning looks like a bright flicker in a cloud. For every cloud-to-ground strike, there can be three to five cloud-to-cloud strikes.
Another type of lightning occurs when some strokes actually emit from the ground into the sky. In this case, the stepped leader proceeds from the ground towards the cloud. The photo below shows this phenomenon well.
The Different Looks of Lightning
Lightning can look very different. For example, you can recognize forked lightning by its jagged or crooked lines. You can also often see several branches shooting from the cloud to the ground, within a cloud, from one cloud to another, or even from the cloud to the air.
Other types of lightning:
- The term “sheet lightning” is used to describe flashes that illuminate an entire cloud, but where the actual bolt of lightning is not seen.
- Heat lightning is a term used to describe distant lightning that you can see but not hear. In this case the visibilities are usually good and the sky is often clear overhead.
- The term “St. Elmo’s fire”, while not lightning, is used to describe still charged particles that appear as a blue or greenish glow above pointed objects such as trees, ship masts or airplane noses. It can sometimes be seen before a lightning strike.
- Lightning can also be seen at high altitudes, shooting upwards out of thunderstorms. In these cases lightning is given fanciful names such as elves, sprites and blue jets.
Negative versus Positive Lightning Strikes
The vast majority of lightning strikes are negative lightning strikes, meaning there is a net transfer of negative charges from the cloud to the ground. Negatives strikes make up about 95 per cent of cloud-to-ground strikes.
When there is a net transfer of positive energy from the cloud to the ground, the strikes are considered positive lightning strikes. These strikes originate from areas of the cloud that have areas of high positive charge, such as in the anvil or top of the cloud, or upper parts of the thunderstorm.
Even though only about five per cent of lightning strikes are positive, they are quite significant because they carry a higher charge and last longer than negative strikes. Due to this, they tend to cause more damage to power and electricity infrastructure, and also start more forest fires than negative strikes. Positive strikes are more common in severe thunderstorms and in thunderstorms that occur during the winter.
Lightning does not just happen in thunderstorms…
Lightning is also known to occur in dust storms, forest fires, and volcanic eruptions. Particles such as sand, smoke and ash, which exist in these environments, can also become electrically charged and create atmospheric conditions similar to that of a thunderstorm.

Holiday Experience
Last holiday, i didn't go anywhere. because my mother had an Umroh Trip. so i just stayed at home, or went out to accompany my little sister did some Kungfu exercise. even though these holiday only 2 weeks, even though these holiday i didn't hang out, but i was really thankful. because i was really free, peace, and. happy. no tasks, no homeworks, no team projects, no personal projects, oh i so enjoyed it.
Do you wanna know about my holiday experience? I'll tell you

after i had paid SKS contract, i went to Pitimoss. Pitimoss is a pleasant place where you can read, lend, or both books. such as: comics, novels, biographies, literatures, or etc. to lend books, you have to be a member. at Pitimoss, i read my favorite comic: Death Note. i was so curious about the strory. I like Light. he is a Death Notes's character. he is smart, critical, cool, and handsome boy. i was drown by the story. until suddenly i heard sound of my adzan. there, i did dzuhur prayer. after that, i went to Ciwalk. i would meet my friend at 1 p.m. as we had planned before.
i arrived there at 1 p.m. I waited. i became bored. then i fooled around the mall, then stopped at Heartwarmer store, there i bought cute rilakuma spray bottle. then i went to bioskop to see the schedule of the movie that would be watched. but it was so sad, the movie (Catching Fire) was not played anymore.
i texted my friend because he hadn't came yet. he said he was on the way. then, i waited at KFC. But i got bored and little dissapointed, i decided to go home. and i bought red bean tea at Comebuy, after that went home. but when i was walking out, he finally came.
actually i was so upset, but i didn't know how to express it. we stared a while and didn't know what to do. HAHAHA i need an icebreaker!
because he had come, i didn;t go home. okay.
there, we would at Mujigae, but the table was empty. so we ate at Giggle Box, because i was confused and had no any choice. there, we talked a lot about everything. we really enjoyed it. but time passed really fast. my mother didn't accuse me to go home too noon. so before we went home, we fooled around the mall together.
25 Dec
my family and i went to my aunty's (my father's sister) house at Parakan. after that, we went to my grandpa's house. i got some money, yeaaaay!
26 Dec
i accompanied my sister to did Kungfu exercise at GGM. after that, my mom dropped us at mcD IP. then we went to PVJ. there, we watched The Hobbit. and we went home at night.
28 Dec
My big family had lunch together at Panghegar restaurant, because my mom and his sister would had an Umroh Trip. After that we went to my aunty's house.
my mom needed a jacket, so i accompanied her to buy at Jalan Riau. it was 8 p.m. and i was really tired and hungry. so we had a dinner at Richeese Factory, and then we went home.

Narrative: The Old Bridge
Old
Man McManor was the foulest-tempered fellow you ever did see; but he
owned and operated the only sawmill over in Camden, so folks had to deal
with him. Whenever anyone didn’t pay on time or crossed him, he’d take
out his horsewhip and flail at them until they ran away cussing or broke
down crying.
One
evening McManor was out riding when a coyote scared his horse and it
bolted. McManor was thrown down next to the bridge by the sawmill, and
his head broke right open. Died instantly. There was a general sigh of
relief when the sawmill was taken over by a nice fellow who’d moved to
Texas from Kansas.
Everyone
thought they’d seen the last of McManor, until one night when Jerry
Jones, an old enemy of McManor, made his way home via the old sawmill
bridge after drinking at the tavern. Jerry was halfway across the old
bridge when a plume of green steam came rising up through the boards of
the bridge. He stopped and watched the mist solidify into the
translucent body of Old Man McManor. The specter flourished his whip at
poor, drunken Jerry, who screamed in terror and went running back the
way he had come with the ghost hard on his heels. When Jerry reached the
giant pecan tree that shaded the road, the ghost of Old Man McManor
vanished at once with another popping sound.
Since
Jerry had a reputation for drinking, no one believed his story until
the ghost challenged the local parson that Sunday and didn’t stop till
the preacher recited some Scripture. McManor continued to harass the
townspeople for years, until the first World War when folks began
driving cars that were fast enough that the ghost couldn’t catch them.
Folks
figured the ghost would give up haunting the bridge after the town got
so modern. But mean old McManor still had one last hurrah in him, and it
was a doozy. The local football team was driving home in the bus one
night after winning a big game, when all at once the bus stalled right
in front of McManor’s bridge. Well, the boys started joking around about
the ghost, until they noticed that the road outside was glowing green.
The boys nudged one another nervously and then turned to look out the
rear window of the bus—right into the twisted smile of Old Man McManor.
The
boys started shrieking, the teachers chiming in just as loud, and the
ghost of Old Man McManor lifted up the back of the bus as if it weighed
no more than a rabbit. The team tumbled out of their seats, screaming
and praying, and the football coach bravely climbed up the sloping
aisle, waving a fist at the ghost in the strange, pulsing green light.
Just then the sheriff came roaring over the bridge on the opposite side
of the road. As soon as his headlights illuminated the ghost holding the
bus, Old Man McManor vanished with a popping sound. The sheriff slammed
on his brakes in shock as the school bus and the team crashed to the
ground. It wasn’t long after this event that they built a new highway
and the old bridge was torn down. The ghost of Old Man McManor hasn’t
been seen since.

How the Rainbow Was Made
One
day when the earth was new, Nanabozho looked out the window of his
house beside the wide waterfall and realized that all of the flowers in
his meadow were exactly the same off-white color. How boring! He decided
to make a change, so he gathered up his paints and his paintbrushes and
went out to the meadow.
Nanabozho sat down in the tall grass and arranged his red and orange and yellow and green and blue and violet paint pots next to him. Then he began to paint the flowers in his meadow in many different colors. He painted the violets dark blue and the tiger lilies orange with brown dots. He made the roses red and pink and purple. He painted the pansies in every color combination he could think of. Then he painted every single daffodil bright yellow. Nanabozho hummed happily to himself as he worked in the brilliant daylight provided by Brother Sun.
Overhead,
two little bluebirds were playing games with each other. The first
little bluebird would chase his friend across the meadow one way. Then
they would turn around and the second bluebird would chase him back the
other way. Zippity-zip went the first bluebird as he raced across the
sky. Zappity-zing went the second bluebird as he chased him in the
brilliant sunshine.
Occasionally, Nanabozho would shade his eyes and look up…up into the endless blue sky to watch the two little birds playing. Then he went back to work, painting yellow centers in the white daisies. Above him, the two birds decided to see how fast they could dive down to the green fields below them. The first bluebird sailed down and down, and then pulled himself up sharply just before he touched the ground. As he soared passed Nanabozho, his right wing dipped into the red paint pot. When the second bluebird dove toward the grass, his left wing grazed the orange paint pot.
Nanabozho
scolded the two birds, but they kept up their game, diving down toward
the grass where he sat painting and then flying back up into the sky.
Soon their feet and feathers were covered with paint of all colors.
Finally Nanabozho stood up and waved his arms to shoo the birds away.
Reluctantly, the bluebirds flew away from Nanabozho and his paint pots, looking for another game to play. They started chasing each other again, sailing this way and that over top of the giant waterfall that stood next to Nanabozho's house. Zippity-zip, the first bluebird flew through the misty spray of the waterfall. The first bluebird left a long red paint streak against the sky. Zappity-zing, the second bluebird chased his friend through the mist, leaving an orange paint streak. Then the birds turned to go back the other way. This time, the first bluebird left a yellow paint streak and the second left a pretty blue-violet paint streak. As they raced back and forth, the colors grew more vivid. When Brother Sun shone on the colors, they sparkled radiantly through the mist of the waterfall.
Below
them, Nanabozho looked up in delight when the brilliant colors spilled
over his meadow. A gorgeous arch of red and orange and yellow and green
and blue and violet shimmered in the sky above the waterfall. Nanabozho
smiled at the funny little bluebirds and said: "You have made a
rainbow!"
Nanabozho was so pleased that he left the rainbow permanently floating above his waterfall, its colors shimmering in the sunshine and the misting water. From that day to this, whenever Brother Sun shines his light on the rain or the mist, a beautiful rainbow forms. It is a reflection of the mighty rainbow that still stands over the waterfall at Nanabozho's house

Unforgettable Experience
it was night, it was dark.
my father came from his office. i was really happy, so my sister and i greeted him in front of the house gate. my father looked so tired, he smiled, answer our greet, then came into the house.
"look there is a cat!", my sister shouted. "where?", i responded. my sister pointed his finger to a shadow. the shadow was like a cat. we love cat so much, so we got closer to the shadow. "hey, bring some food", i asked my sister. after a while, she came with a small piece of fried chicken in her hand. then she handed me.
and we walked to the shadow. so we were very close to the shadow....
but unfortunately...
it was scaring.
the shadow wasn't a shadow's cat, but dog's! oh no....
this dog wasn't such a cute dog, or nice dog, but it was big, and wild dog.
automatically, we ran, ran, and ran, faster, faster, and faster.
but, the dog ran too. it looked like want to chase us. so scaring moment ever! my sister had run before me, so she reached house and she was safe. but how about me? i couldn't do anything.
my mind was full with fear of bitten by that dog. but, i couldn't run, because it was useless, so i just closed my eyes and prayed to God. might God help me.
and so fortunately, the dog just passed me. and i was safe. i thanked to God. and i walked slowly to the house, cause i was so weak after had that scaring moment. i reached house. my sister was waiting for me.
and finally i told it to everyone in house, about my scaring moment. and we just couldn't stop to laugh...
and i can't forget this moment. oh what a day!

Describing Person
I have a new friend. Her name is Della Nurramadhanti Rosanda. She's from 13JSH. She was born on 16 January 1998. She lives at Jalan Bunga Bakung number 26. Her idol is her father.
We meet at first when we PLiST (orientation period of new student) at 3SHS. We were at the same district; district 8. We made prototype together with district 8. There, we knew each other.
After we spent some days at Baabussalam (pesantren kilat), joined leadership and basic military training at Rindam Siliwangi, joined OST, and sat together in same class (english class), now we're getting know each other.
She is so friendly, nice, childish, and quite crazy, i think. But i like being with her, it never boring. I hope someday we can be close friend. And maybe we can study together again at library.
